About Steven H. Atherton

Founded by Attorney Steven H. Atherton, Atherton Law provides attentive, personal, and cost-effective legal counsel to its clients. In his legal practice, Mr. Atherton has worked for some of the largest and most prestigious international law firms and, for more than thirty years, ran his own small-town general practice. As a result, he has litigated in criminal, family, civil, probate, tax, bankruptcy and appellate courts; written wills and trusts; helped people to buy, sell, develop, and lease real estate; counseled businessmen in every aspect of their operations and resolved just about every kind of dispute.

In the business world, Mr. Atherton has worked in many different capacities. Prior to entering the practice of law, Mr. Atherton worked as a chemical engineer at General Mills in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he served as the Pilot Plant Engineer at the James Ford Bell Technical Center and as a Project Engineer in an internal consulting group. He also worked overseas as an engineering trainee in the plastics laboratory for Philips Corporation in the city of Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Even since opening his law practice in 1992, Mr. Atherton ran a successful Internet Service Provider, Web Page Design, and law office computer consulting firm. He has also assisted many small business owners succeed in many different fields.

Mr. Atherton grew up in suburban Washington, D.C., so he is no stranger to government. During his youth, he worked for the U.S. Senate Budget Committee during President Reagan’s first term, the International Trade Commission as a law student, and has interacted with local, state, and federal government officials throughout his legal career on behalf of clients. These experiences have developed in him a very practical perspective on how best to interact with government officials in a wide variety of situations.

Minister for decades, Mr. Atherton has helped people from all walks of life successfully address the most intimate and difficult issues people experience. As a husband and homeschooling father of four, Mr. Atherton understands the trials, tribulations, and joys of family life. As someone who has lived and worked in urban and rural areas across the northeast, southeast, mid-west and southwestern parts of the U.S. as well as in Peru, South Africa and the Netherlands, Mr. Atherton knows people. When coupled with his travels throughout the United States, Western Europe, Central America, the Middle East, Ghana, and South Africa, these diverse experiences have developed in Mr. Atherton an insightful perspective that enables him to understand where people are coming from and how to help them achieve their goals.

1980-1984
Worked for a civil engineer, the U.S. Senate Budget Committee, Philips Corporation in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, served as a Resident Advisor in the dormitories at Cornell University, and cooked Sunday Brunch in the Hotel School’s Main Dining Room. These experiences built upon the work ethic he had established working at his parents Used Book Store, mowing lawns in his community, and delivering the Washington Post early every morning by bicycle in his neighborhood.
